1. AWA INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT INNOVATION AWARD for Western Treatment Plant 55E Cover Renewal
Melbourne Water & JacobsIn an ambitious and challenging project, the world’s largest open ended cover for anaerobic lagoons has been developed for the Western Treatment Plant by Melbourne Water. The innovative cover, the first to be designed and built in 11 arc shaped segments, was developed to allow greater operational and maintenance flexibility. The convex shaped segments are able to operate collectively or be individually isolatable for maintenance and replacement without affecting the robustness of the remaining segments. The new cover increases biogas capture and helps to reduce odours. The selection of HDPE was based on extensive investigations, accelerated exposure trials by ExcelPlas Labs, membrane testing by ExcelPlas and a multi-criteria assessment and enables the 20 year design life to be met.
