Coletanche™ BGM and GHD Engineers Cap TSF at Copper Mine in QLD
A recently completed environmental rehabilitation project using Coletanche bituminous geomembranes in central Queensland used 130,000 m2 of Coletanche ES2 was used to cap an old copper tailings storage facility at the Capricorn Copper Mine near Mt Isa. The Coletanche provides a puncture resistant waterproofing layer which prevents water infiltration into this old tailings facility. The Coletanche is then capped with 2 metres of growth medium soil to promote the regrowth of natural vegetation.
In the attached photo you can see the Coletanche ES2 being installed in the foreground and the soil cover being placed over the Coletanche in the background. The Coletanche waterproofing layer provides a far superior solution to the other alternative of a clay capping layer which would still allow some infiltration. The project was designed by GHD consulting engineers.
