HOT TOPIC: DRAINAGE PERFORMANCE OF GEOSYNTHETIC LAYERS IN A DOUBLE LINED CONTAINMENT APPLICATION UTILIZING FLEXIBLE GEOMEMBRANES
In recent years, regulators have specified use of double lined leak detection systems in various geomembrane containment applications. One popular application is where the geonet is encapsulated between the primary and secondary geomembrane to monitor and remove leaks. The interaction between the geomembrane and geonet under high hydraulic loads can potentially result in the flexible geomembrane being pushed into the ribs of the geonet. This deflection from the plane in a geomembrane can adversely affect the drainage performance of the leak detection layer. There is limited research available on this subject matter. Standard Test Methods such as ASTM D4716 determine the hydraulic transmissivity of a Geosynthetic using a constant head, however this test does not take into consideration the geomembrane deflection into the drainage layer as the geomembrane specimen is supported by steel plate. There is also not much choice available for design engineer’s from a geomembrane selection perspective.
