Measurement of Role of Transverse and Longitudinal Members on Pullout Resistance of PET Geogrid

Weak Subgrade Treatment Using Geogrid Reinforcement
In order to demonstrate and quantify the benefit of geogrid reinforcement in improving the bearing capacity of weak subgrades, a full-scale laboratory, as well as two recent full-scale instrumented field trial beds, were constructed and evaluated by the authors; one in Germany and another one in Australia. In each project the variation in observed in-situ bearing capacity and the modulus parameter was evaluated over a series of variants, including geogrid strength/stiffness, geogrid combination, thickness and quality of cover materials. The results demonstrate a clear improvement in the bearing capacity of the geogrid reinforced section when compared to the unreinforced sections. Similarly, the reinforced trial beds exhibited a considerable reduction in the vertical deformation and lower magnitudes of normal stress being transferred to the underlying weak subgrade were observed. The results also demonstrated a clear influence of the strength parameter of the geogrids on the performance of the geogrid reinforcement.
